@flottos Have you actually critically-appriased these studies for their quality? Do you know what that entails? Do you have the skill set and education to be able to provide reason for profeering these studies as evidence of anything? Well?
June 20th, 2010 - 17:26
@AllIntentionsToBreak Or you could go to university and study health science and research methodology and be able to have a skill set to critique the scientific literature directly instead of “googling” like a dimwit. Do you think researchers “google” when they search for high quality studies, or perhaps they pick up a book, as you suggest…and have the authors of the book tell them. Does education not matter at all to you?

@flottos As for the studies that you suggested, and as it has been repeated elsewhere, spinal manipulation MAY provide some beneift for acute uncomplicated lbp. However, the evidence is not overwhelmingly in favour of this. I suggest that you refer to the review by Bronfort and read it in its entirety for a clearer picture (that certainly does not make claim that smt is effective for lbp.

@MostlyPerfect Quackery is when you sell people on the benefits of something without the evidence that what you are selling them in fact works. Which is what chiros do, and so to answer your question, which is why people consider them quacks.
June 20th, 2010 - 18:01
@hfdc1 If that was the case, then the evidence would be overwhelmingly in support of chiropractic, which it is not. Using a hypothetical situation as a proxy for solid evidence when you are looking for support of your argument only works if there is evidence. How about chiros just DO THE RESEARCH? Is it because the profession is afraid of what it might find–that it is not effective in all those claims? Why does the chiro graduate not leave with a solid basis of scientific methodology?
June 20th, 2010 - 18:05
@hfdc1 Why don’t you give a good read of the Simon Singh scandal in the UK and take a long, hard look at what the BCA provided as supporting evidence in its attempt to intimidate Singh? This case, and the fallout from it, will further push chiro into the fringes and away from ever being considered legitimate. QUACKERY!

@flottos I assume that if you are sending me the citations of studies that look at spinal manips and low back pain, then you might also be interested in a Cochrane review article (Assendelft WJJ, Morton SC, Yu Emily I, Suttorp MJ, Shekelle PG. Spinal manipulative therapy for low-backpain.). The authors conclude: “There is no evidence that spinal manipulative therapy is superior to other standard treatments for patients with acute or chronic low-back pain.”

You are the ONLY person on youTUBE to say “do not try this at home”. That is very sensible advice. No one else warns you MUST be trained and qualified, so if you’re not don’t try it. It looks easy but you can’t tell what he is feeling for and could cause a nasty injury. Always leave this sort of thing to professionals.

@GanjaOnDeck You have a strange way of thinking about men, but each to their own in this diverse world. Shame you can’t keep stupid comments that others might find offensive to yourself.

Might help to tell everyone that the “noise” that is heard is simply the fluid in the joint shifing from one side of the joint to the other through a vacum. Just like with our knucles.

Does anybody know if chiropractors can manipulate the sternum? Every so often I will have tightness on the right border of my sternum and it will pop and the pain will go away. I haven’t figured out how to self manipulate but it just sometimes happens. I know that a lot of chiros are quacks because they claim that crunching bones can cure autism, diabetes, etc. but I think that if they can manipulate my sternum it will help me for sure.

Keep in mind, this doctor is talking in lay language, not as if he is describing this to another doctor. Pretty good job at keeping a very complicated procedure simple.

@MarathonVeteran yes-some can and will do a chosto-chondral adjustment that affects the rib articulations into the sternum.

That gives a clear explanation, much more detailed than other videos. People might be tempted to try twisting heads by watching other videos, this one explains the process and it’s very interesting.
