Saturated fats can also cause blood platelets to stick together and form blood clots that can cause a heart attack or stroke. Reducing consumption of saturated fat improves the health of most people. They provide support to your cell membranes and serve as precursors to a variety of hormones and hormonelike substances. A middle of the road approach to saturated fat consumption is to consume about 3 to 7 percent of your daily calories as saturated fat. -- Don't Be Afraid of Natural Fat That's right, the kind that's found in a piece of meat, an omelet, an avocado, olives, or olive-oil-based dressing. Essential Fatty Acids Two tablespoons of ground flax seeds every day or two teaspoons daily of flax seed oil, in addition to avoiding omega 6-rich oils (corn, safflower, sunflower, cottonseed), saturated fats, and trans fats. Diabetics and pregnant or breast-feeding women should take 300 mg of DHA every day.
