MIL says "store bought" vitamins are worthless"?

She says "store bought" or "synthetic" vitamins are not good for a child. They don't have anything the body REALLY needs and are not easily absorbed in the body. She wants me to give the kids this liquid vitamin she gets at online, I'd have to give it several times a day...

DISCLAIMER: I have done NO research on vitamins. I'm starting here with other people's opinions. I know nothing about vitamins except that all the pediatricians I've ever seen and the pharmacist good friend I have say store vitamins are fine.

My MIL does her research ONLINE.... I have had to explain to her NUMEROUS times that just because something is online, does NOT make it a legit scientific experience. She's emailed me SOOOO many "articles/studies/scientific journals" over the years that are just CRAP. They are NOT scientist, the research is skewed, and it was the only "research" of it's kind that I could find....and again it was NOT a scientific study done by a legit college/medical hospital/or any other conventional scientists...

So, what are your thoughts on vitamins? She kind of already has a strike against her in my book, so I'm hesitant to believe her on this topic.

In case you are curious, here is the vitamin she wants me to give the kids.

  1. Oh Lord, so she thinks buying online vitamins are better than store bought vitamins??? Ha! Okay, well liquid vitamins do essentially get absorbed better, but you get plenty from pills as well. Essentially with the pill vitamins and with liquid as well, the body absorbs what it needs and then the rest is excreted from the body, which is why our pee turns neon yellow after we take vitamins…however, there is nothing that says pill vitamins are bad for a child…

It’s better to take any kind of vitamin than no vitamin. I don’t exactly know where she got her info from, but yes there are a lot of vitamins and herbs out there that aren’t really necessary, but a multivitamin is good for them and better than nothing at all. I think your MIL sounds a little looney. My husband’s step mother does not take multi vitamins. She only buys vitamins that she thinks she needs such as vitamin C, calcium and something else, but she thinks she gets enough of everything else from the foods that she eats…she is totally crazy and falls for this crap like you are talking about with your mil. I would ignore her and keep doing what you are doing. I plan on giving haley flintstones when she’s old enough…ha! :)

Edit: BTW – half the crap on that link is crap…anything that says detox is bad, and colon cleanser is really bad. I did find research on that as my husband was taking it…she’s looney. Stick with what you are doing…and like the girl above me said tell her that what you have is what the pediatrician recommended. She needs to mind her own business honestly.

  2. You know what? Buy whatever vitamins you want, and then tell her that your Pediatrician told you to get that kind. and shut her the hell up. Honestly, she’s got nothing to do. Store bought vitamins are NOT Worthless, and who the hell is going to give a kid vitamins several times a day! What if they don’t like the taste?! Give me a break…they are always interferring when it is none of their business.
    Do what you like.

  3. Your body can’t tell the difference between a chemical vitamin and a organic vitamin, they are all the same vitamin, chemically. The important part is to get them into your body. Learn the RDA of necessary vitamins so you get the right amount, some can be toxic if you get too much. The store vitamins usually never have too much of any vitamin in the multiple vitamin products…
