Love your material, I will be ordering your dvds this week. One question I have that I cant find anywhere is, Ive had ACL reconstruction on my left knee, are there any stretchs that I should avoid? Hope you can help.

That actually depends on a few factors. Integrity of other ligaments. flexibility of certain muscles (lack of flexibility can transfer the forces into the knee.)
Stage of rehabilitation, etc.
You have to have someone next to you who knows what they are doing, who can test you and prescribe a specific routine.

Everytime I practice my tornado kick I get a lower back pain on the side of my kicking leg after a few times. It feels muscular, so I think its in my technique, but I figured you’re the go to guy to find out if something else might be doin this. Could you help me to figure out what is causing this pain?

I think I have weak abductors.

There’s a problem with the audio, you can notice it with headphones: only the left sounds, while the right one is quiet. I’ve not the same problem with other youtube videos, so it’s clear that’s a problem with the audio track of this one.

Mephiroth2,
Unless I am there and I can see your technique and do some tests, there is no way to give you a correct answer, not to mention a program to fix it.

Hi Paul ,
this sure helps me. Can you also share your experience on another issue? My elbow snaps for 6 months now, it does not hurt much but it’s annoying. I was recovering fine , but during last month I regressed.

Khelonium,
That’s too little information. You have to have a professional next to you look at it.

Hi Paul,
First let me say, fantastic videos!! I’m a PT and a martial artist and your videos have help a lot.
I have a question I get a lot of different answers so maybe you can help shed some light?
When strtchin do you recommend holding stetches for long periods of time e.g up to say 30mins? A lot of martial artist i speak with recommend this, yet a lot of dancers I speak to say the opposite. I personally think dancers have better balance, stability and control but I find myself confused?

Luke,
There isn’t one answer for everything and for everyone. I like to compare the prescription of flexibility oriented techniques to Homeopathy and Ayurveda. Two people with a head ache will get different prescription, because of the difference in their bodies. Same goes for flexibility training.
Thank you for your comments.

For the past month I’ve had a pain in my lower back on my right hand side, just above my right butt cheek, and I’m pretty sure it came around because of my Taekwondo training. It only hurts while I train and usually dies down less than a day later, but comes back for any sport that I do now. Do you think it’s the same muscle/problem you mentioned in your video? I’m going to ask my doctor about it next time I see him too, but I’m glad I subscribed otherwise I’d have missed this video! Thanks!

Hi Paul, your videos are great and have really helped in improving my flexibility. My little brother who is 14 has great flexibility, easlily throwing high kicks with next to no warm up. The only regular stretching he does is twice a week during training. Recently he has noticed clicking in both knees when doing high kicks. He says its not painful, but it really dosen’t sound healthy. Any idea what the cause is, and if it will cause damage in the future? Many thanks

GoldenJoker,
I do the MRI first. Have your doctor check the QL manually for L/R strength and trigger points.
He will be in better position to advice you by being right there, then I am from your description.

Is the clicking only in high kick? Which kicks?
June 29th, 2009 - 20:26
No both knees click when the knees bend greater than the range of motion required for walking/running ie. they don’t click when walking or running but anything more than that they make a loud click. Its particularly noticeable when doing high section turning kicks without hitting a pad and doing squats without weight. He now tells me he has always had this problem, I only noticed it recently.

That’s a very short description,OBrien. It can be incorrect traction. One of the quads or hamstrings/grac.,sart, tendons pulling differently. Ligaments or cartilage issue. Knee is a very complex joint. I would have an orthopedic look at it. If he tells your brother, “don’t worry about”, find another one.

Sorry about the poor description, i am not aware of the varies test I would need to do to describe his condition better. I took him to see his doctor, and he said its because hes becoming more flexible and ‘not to worry’ I think he just told us what he thought we wanted to hear. Although this problem hasn’t affected his performance its obviously not something that can’t be ignored. Thanks for your advice, I am going to look for someone who specializes in knee joints here in Ireland.

nice video very imformative. I also have a question when ever I rotate my hips when i punch my lower back hurts a little and i think it is the mucsles that im probably straining . Is there any exercises that can help lessen or prevent the pain?
August 25th, 2009 - 12:22
Rick,
It can be a disc, it can be your SI joint, it can be one of the muscles.
The root can be over training, inadequate conditioning or incorrect technique.
I can’t tell from your description.
It’s best that you find a professional next to you, who can guide you.

I had a weird lower back pain 8 years ago. When even I would bow my head while I was sitting, this simple move would cause an acute type of pain. I stopped the training totally but it took months to stop…

Hi Paul,
I think I am getting the exact same pain as you describe here in the video.
When doing side kicks and high kicks especially.
I can get my leg high(er than normal) when I put it on someone’s shoulders and they rise slowly. But when they let my leg go, the pain shoots in again.
Had it checked by a orthopedic doctor, but it seemed fine on the xray.
Hope you can help!

Hi Paul, your videos are very unique and really awsome. I have a problem…maybe you can give some advice. My problem is a pain in my left knee. I fell the pain for months now. its not a constant pain, it comes and go…even in rest time. Today when i did squats i felt it again. when two legs are parallel and both do squat – no problem and no pain. but when i do the exercise of one leg in front and doing the squat without the knee touchong the floor, i feel sharp pain in the knee – above the kn
