Ladies: Can keeping your toenails polished make them unhealthy?

I always keep my toenails polished, but after about two or so weeks, I remove the old polish and repaint them. When I remove the polish, my toenails seem to be very soft, flexible and unhealthy. What should I do: keep the polish off them for a while or should I put some clear coat on them before putting on the polish? I don't like looking at my toenails without nail color on them, so is there a way to keep them polished and still bring them back to a healthy state again? If there's a vitamin I can take to help them get healthy, what vitamin is best?

I greatly appreciate any advice and help! Thank you in advance for all your suggestions and advice. I really appreciate it!
I don't have a fungus - just that the chemicals in the polish seem to get in the nails and thus, making them unhealthy.

  1. how funny i just asked how can i make nail polish last on… well let me get to your question… yes leave them unpainted for a while… i know what you mean i hate to see my toe nails bare too… just make sure you wear closed shoes for the weeks you keep them nude… buy some nail strengthener on and then put clear nail polish then color.. good luck and take care of those toes…

  2. I’ve heard that too, but mine have been continuously covered for years with no problems. If you’re having trouble, let them air out a bit before repolishing. Make sure you don’t have a fungus or something.

  3. yea:/ my friend is always painting her nails (on her fingers) and she does a great job at it, and they look really good but when she takes the nailpolish off, her nails dont look very healthy.

your nails need to breathe. just like if you wear a ton of makeup, your skin isnt healthy and you get pimples.

    hope this helps!

  4. my friends toenails go a funny colour when she paints them all the time-she went to the doc and he said it wasnt a fungal infection or anything they just need a break and some light now and again. its probably the same sort of thing-so give them a break or paint them clear-lol hope this helps x

  6. I almost have the same type of problem with my toe nails.. This is what I do; when I remove my nail polish, instead of using regular cuticle oil, I use vitamin e oil. Try it for a week or two. & Yes, DO use a strengthening top coat before putting on nail polish.

  7. let them breathe for about a week (wear flats to cover them up) and then apply basecoat before the color, then apply topcoat.
base coat with strengtheners in them are really good for your nails.

  8. yes… if your nails are unhealthy after so much polish, rub half a lemon over them…
