Is there anything I can do to raise my blood pressure when it drops very low?

Although my blood pressure tends to run a little low, I had a stroke about a yr ago & am diabetic. On insulin, but well controlled. But there are times, especially at night, when my BP drops down to around 70/55 & I feel like crap! Is there any way I can raise it when that happens safely that anyone knows of? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

  1. Try drinking more water. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of low blood pressure. Do not eat more salt, since you had a stroke in your past and eating salt can compromise your health. Also, exercising more frequently can raise your blood pressure.

  2. I would check with your doctor.

Sugar free peanut butter? not too salty, but no added sugar

  3. You definitely need to talk to your doctor because that is FAR too low. I raised my blood pressure by eating more salt. I would mix about a 1/4 tsp into a glass of water. Most people don’t want to eat too much salt because it raises your blood pressure, but you may find it actually makes you feel better. When you are feeling really spinny/sick, it helps to lie down and put your feet up onto pillow (or the edge of a couch). Just make sure that your legs are above your heart.

  4. You should really ask your doctor but maybe drinking a sugar-free caffeinated drink like a diet Pepsi or diet Coke may help you feel more "awake", however, if you are sensitive to caffeine….it could just keep you awake and may prevent you from getting enough sleep. When your BP is low you could try to do some gentle exercises to get the heart rate up to raise your BP a little bit. But…..as I said you really need to speak with your doctor about this.
