Is taking too much Vitamin C a bad thing?

I keep a bottle of vitamin c tablets on my desk at work and you're supposed to take one tablet a day but sometimes I take up to 3 a day. I get bored and they don't taste that bad so I just kind of snack on them. Can too much of a good thing be bad for you?

  1. The Vitamin C Foundation actually recommends 3 gm (3,000 mg) per day but most Heath Authorities recommend a lot less.

Too much vitamin C can cause kidney stones and vitamin C is also a diuretic.

It sounds like your vitamin C tablets are probably the very strong 1 gm (1,000 mg) tablets so 1 or 2 per day would be OK and perhaps even 3 a day but definitely no more.

As vitamin C is water soluble the excess is simply eliminated every day in your water.

  2. yep over dose of vitamin C overa long period is known to damage your kidneys

  3. Three a day isn’t likely to cause kidney damage and since it’s a water soluble vitamin you’ll just pee out what your body doesn’t use. For me, the bigger problem is causing your body to need more of it than it used to.

  4. All you’re doing by taking too much vitamin C is giving yourself expensive urine. Vitamin C is water soluble and will just get flushed down the toilet if your body can’t use it.
Maybe get something else to snack on…..

  5. Chronic high doses of Vitamin C can precipitate a scorbutic condition when you stop taking them. Your body adjusts to the high dosages and develops the signs and symptoms of scurvy when stopped.
