I'm 16 years and turning 17 in two months. I dropped out of school because of social anxiety. I decided this year that I want to take GED classes or attending some program my school district offers for dropouts. HERES THE THING; I have a hard time remembering things and concentrating. I heard that the vitamin "Ginseng" can improve concentration and give you more energy and sense of well being. So today I went to the store and bought a bottle of "Ginseng Xtra" by Sundown and a bottle of "St. Johns Word, 300 MG" by Sundown. The St. Johns Word is supposed to "promote a positive mind".
So does Ginseng usually work? Are these vitamins safe to take? On both bottles it says they're Herbal Supplements. I really need something to improve my concentration and mood.

Always ask a doctor or pharmisist before taking herbal suppliments because they can sometimes interfere with other meds you are taking or sometimes even foods you are eating.

I wouldn’t mix them – I’ve heard bad things about the results of mixing them. Plus, there’s no scientific proof that either work. I attached a website about herbal supplements and the risks (and this a pro-herbal site). I would go to a doctor and get your conditions diagnosed – my friend’s on a anti-anxiety medication that really works for him. And it’s relatively cheap.

Ginseng has been known to reduce stress, but i have never heard of it promoting concentration and memory. Then again it doesn’tt really matter because the results of the actual tests done trying to verify ginseng differ so widely its unknown whether it actually does anything. Maybe go to your doctor and ask him if there is anything you can take or if something could be wrong with you.

St John’s Wort can actually cause depression too. I tried it once and it didn’t work.
If you have a lot of anxiety, that can cause you not to be able to focus and remember things.
I would suggest instead of these supplements that you:
1. Start getting enough sleep each night, at least 8hrs for your age, which also helps with anxiety and brain processes.
2. Make sure you are eating regularly and correctly.. fruits especially bananas, Veggies, fish, etc. Don’t go eating a lot of one and neglect the other food groups. They work together.
3. Take a multivitamin found in the store… I’ve been taking One A Day Womens.
4. Try to reduce your stress level.. exercise helps.
And for sure.. go back and get your GED and if you can afford it, go to college for at least two years preferably four. This will help you get a better paying job. If you have problems studying, join a study group or find a tutor.
STICK WITH IT, you will be glad you did.
Good luck!!

You should never take vitamins without checking with your doctor 1st. The reason, your body should get all the nutrients from food intake. If you take extra vitamins you may cause your body harm. Same goes for taking vitamins A. C, D. I wish every person in this world would realize they should not take vitamins without checking with there doctor. So, I hope that someone in the med field reads and answers your question. If you feel the need to take ginseng, you should drink juice or tea with ginseng already in it, such as arizona green tea. Your such at a young age, you should not need something to improve your concentration or mood, unless you were or are using illegal drugs.
What you NEED to do is, go to your primary doctor and tell him/her what you feel, and you have trouble concentrating…
