I just started taking 8000 mcg of biotin a day..Is this too much?

my dermatologist recommended 2500 mcg of biotin a day for healthy hair & nails..i could only find the 300 mcg biotin supplements at the local health store..so i got the higher dose biotin pills online from thorne research..its a single dose of 8000 mcg which i take at lunch time along with some b-complex vitamins. will this be safe and effective?

  1. I have been taking one 30mg of Biotin for hair and nails. and I have seen improvement in the nails after a few months. My hair is improving as well. Why would anyone need that much biotin is questionable to me, did you ask if there are any side effects of that much biotin ?

  2. I have never heard of taking so much biotin.
It is a B vitamin and, in general, B Vitamins
should be taken in proportion to one another. Look up biotin for other uses on http://www.lef.org or http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez

  3. I am not 100% positive, but I am very sure that you’ll be fine. Biotin is a B vitamin and is therefore water soluble. Meaning, any excess of biotin in your system will just be excreted through urine.

However, taking 8000 mcg of Biotin in one shot might not be as effective as taking 4000 mcg twice a day. If it’s a tablet, I would consider cutting it in half. If it’s a capsule, then dividing it would obviously be out of the question.

I should also add that I currently take 6000 mcg daily, in three different doses. But again, taking to much will not hurt you.

Good luck and hope I helped!
