How to deal with high blood pressure and high potassium?

My husband has just been diagnosed with high blood pressure and was put on a low sodium diet. Further blood tests show his potassium levels are too high, so he is to avoid high potassium foods. What I have found suggests avoiding any salt substitutes or lite salt products, avoid whole grain breads and cereals, milk, yogurt, etc. The "heart healthy" diet his doctor gave him suggests eating whole grains and using "lite" salt as well as low-fat dairy products. So how do you balance the two conflicting diets?

  1. Unfortunately it is not uncommon to have conflicting information from health care professionals because of the complexity of treatments.

Many ‘lite salt’ products use a potassium salt instead of a sodium salt, and you are correct: your husband should not use these as his potassium levels could rise too high.

I believe Mrs Dash may be alright to use, but be certain to read the label of any product prior to use. Sometimes the ingredients are changed without notice.

Ask your physician for a dietician consult: they can help you develop a safe diet program for your husband

  2. Check this website out: http://www.lowerhbp.com/recommends/bptruth/

it has a lot of information on high blood pressure and it covers a lot on the topic of potassium and sodium. It shows you how to balance the levels out.

It’s provides real good information. My mom’s BP is close to normal now after following the recommendations given in it.
