I need more protein in my diet since I am staying away from meat so I am looking to quinoa to satisfy that need. My friend bought me some and it came with no directions. This is definitely NOT how you cook rice so I really appreciate the demonstration. Now to view some recipes and start cooking and eating.
Thank you Dr. Nyman for stating the water to rinse it with should be hot. And to Quinoacat, I will not forget your comparison to manna from heaven. Thank you YouTube for being here. Thank all of you for posting. I am now making my first batch of Quinoa!!!
I do not think you need to soak it for hours. Following the advice of some one who commented earlier on try using warm water for a few minutes. This might speed up the process
@icephoenyx It depends upon the brand. Eden Foods uses a rubbing process to remove the saponins from the quinoa before they sell it, so only minimal rinsing is necessary. I toast mine in a skillet on medium heat for a few minutes before rinsing. I also only use 1 1/3 cup of water per 1 cup of quinoa and cook it covered for 12 minutes.
Read some of the others’ comments and figured I’d put my two cents in. I buy my quinoa from the bulk section at the market. (Love the bulk section!) I cook it as I would rice: 1 part quinoa to 2 parts liquid (I like to use homemade veggie stock; water is great but adds no flavor), I bring to a simmer and cover for 15 minutes at a reduced heat. As for rinsing, I learned to rinse the quinoa in a strainer until the water no longer foams on the top of the grains. Hope this helps!

Could I use my rice cooker with this too? None of the recipes I’ve seen mention this, but it would be a lot more convenient..
Nice video:-)

Should you simmer with the lid on or not?
December 22nd, 2009 - 22:23
I do not cover with a lid. Most of the moisture is absorbed by the quinoa. Covering the pan might leave you with extra water

I just bought some in bulk….do I need to rinse it for longer than the video shows?
I read somewhere you should let it soak for several hours….

Quinoa can be bought from Tesco? I’ve been going to specialist shops for years for that stuff.

what about salt ?

@Paint4ever2
You don’t need salt – there is plenty of flavour in the quinoa

I like the vid, although it was strange to see a female body with a male voice narrating.
