How much is too much of a vitamin?

I am trying to improve the appearance of my skin. If say I take a multivitamin supplement that gives me 100% of say vitamin C, then I drink I can of V8 vegetable juice which contains 80%, plus other foods throughout the day that may contain it, is that a bad thing since I am exceeding 100%?

  1. Each vitamin and mineral is different and is more effective with different intake levels. Vitamin C, specifically, is 2000mg a day, however higher doses are okay. Vitamin C is water soluble so you will eliminate excess in your urine.

What is more important is the quality of the supplements you’re taking. I take my Magnesium, Calcium, Antioxidant, Vitamin C, Multi-mineral (zinc, iodine, selenium, etc), Omega fish oil and Vitamin B complex in separate tablets/capsules. When a company tries to put too many different supplements into one pill, the quality and potency suffers causing a big ol’ waste of money.

Most often, it’s not bad to go a little over the RDI. Everyone is different and has different needs. Nobody can say exactly how much your body needs, you just have to pay close attention to how your body changes with new supplements.

The company I get all of my stuff (and most of my information) from is called Jigsaw Health. If you’re looking for a really good supplementation system (not like Centrum, One A Day, etc), look at theirs, I’ve been quite happy with them.

    I hope this helps!

  2. Well at a certain point when you take in too many vitamins ur body will not absorb them all so more than likely You are just peeing a lot of that out. However it will not hurt you now but could have a lasting effect on your internal functions.

  3. no because when you urinate and its yellow those are the extra vitamins in your body that arent metabolized. thats why when you drink a lot of water or even alcohol which both have no vitamins your urine is clear after a while because you pee out extra vitamins.

  4. Your body can only absorb a certain amount of vit. C, the excess is urinated. If you want to maximise your vit.C levels the best way is to top up with the recommended amounts of pure vit.C powder regularly throughout the day. I would use caution and only use the recommended amounts of other supplements though. Better to make your own veg. juices as they will be fresher and contain more nutrients (also will help to detox), eat whole fruit & veg. for fibre, & a little exercise. Hope it is of help, good luck!
