How far in advance should you take prenatal vitamins?

I read online that you can/should start taking prenatal vitamins up to two years in advance of conceiving. Is this true? What vitamins do you take? I usually buy a lot of things in bulk on ebay or at costco so if it's at one of those locations that'd be great. Thanks!

  1. Well, I’m 17, and not conceiving anytime soon, but I take prenatal vitamins daily. I got them at Whole Foods and they are vegan and all natural. I also take vitamins because I have an iron deficiency and am often light-headed. I hope this helps.

  2. women of childbearing age should take a multivitamin. only 50% of pregnancies are planned. so if you can have a kid, you should be on a daily vitamin to protect neural tube defects in your developing fetus.

prenatal vitamins are not much different from regular multivitamins, but they do have more folic acid. just be sure your multivitamin has folic acid in it.

do not buy multivitamins from anywhere other than a herb shop, whole foods, etc. vitamins bought in most grocery stores and pharmacies are of poor quality. you can xray your stomach and watch the vitamin travel the length of your GI tract. be sure your vitamin is good quality. or just go on prenatals. either way, you should already be taking vitamins.
