How can I get oxycontin for my severe back pain?
I've had back pain for the past year and a half, and I finally went to a chiropractor last week. They took a scan and x-ray and found that my back was very damaged. I broke down crying at work today because the pain was so excruciating. What kind of doctor could I show these results to and get a strong painkiller like oxycontin to alleviate the pain?

You would be refered to a neurologist, but you can’t just take a drug, you have to diagnose and fix problem which would involve possible spinal surgery.

Why Oxy and not some other pain med? It sounds like you have taken Oxy before and you liked the high so now you are wanting some more. I realize Chiro’s don’t like to prescribe pain meds but sometimes you need them to help with the pain. I would go to a either a Neurologist or an Orthopedic Dr.. But whatever you do DO NOT go into there office and the first thing out of your mouth is I need some Oxy’s. If you do you won’t get them because he will think that is the only reason you are going to see him. Take the x-rays, so he knows you are serious, he may want to do a Cat Scan or an M.R.I. and if he does then go with it but then say is there anything that I can take to help me with the pain? Tell him you have tried over the counter meds and none of those help you at all. So since he is going to make money by giving you tests he will probably give you some pain meds. But don’t be surprised if he only gives you maybe enough for a week or two. He does not want you to get hooked is why. Good Luck.

I’ve been through this whole thing, the injury, the diagnosis, the surgeries., etc. and am now disabled due to severe chronic pain. I also take Oxycontin but there are many other drugs to be tried before you settle on what’s right for you, if any. There are other procedures to be tried too such as therapy, a Tens Unit, etc.. Hopefully you won’t need surgery since that’s a cra$shoot and is the very last resort.
First you need to see an orthopedic doctor to get your diagnosis. For pain control you will be turned over to a Pain Management doctor, they usually work in tandem with each other. Don’t expect to get drugs right away, or at the very least the heavier ones. Doctors don’t want to put you on them unless this will be a chronic problem because of the high addiction rate, actually your body will become physically addicted to them very quickly. A Neurologist would be where to start to find a pain management doctor, one who will specialize in this particular field.
Do not ask for any specific medication as that will be a huge red flag, will be in your permanent medical records and follow you to every doctor after wards. If you ask for oxy you probably won’t get it. Good luck and I hope you get some relief soon, one way or another.
P.S. I didn’t get any pain meds until after I had my first surgery. I was given other types of drugs to control the pain plus steroid injections in my spine (similar to a spinal tap).

If you have a regular doctor just be honest with him. I told mine that a mate gave me a 20mg Oxynorm ,even though he really shouldn’t have, and that I was pain-free for a few hours for the first time in years. My doc. then prescribed me Oxycontin ( because the slow release is better for chronic pain) and I haven’t looked back since. If your pain isn’t really all that bad and you’re just hoping for a nice cheap buzz, a good doctor will see through you and you’ll get Panadol or something equally as useless and dangerous. Chiropractors are dangerous quacks IMHO.
