How can a person tell if their blood pressure is high?

Are there any symptoms or signs that would tell a person that their blood pressure is high without going to a doctor or drug store and have it tested?

  1. You can’t. That’s why it’s known as the ‘silent killer.’ Some people with high blood pressure aka hypertension, may experience headaches or visual problems, but this is rare.
If you suspect you have high blood pressure, you need to see a doctor and have it treated, because if you don’t a stroke or kidney failure could be your first sign, and then it’s too late.

  2. There is no way to can tell … just by looking at a person…. you can buy a blood pressure monitor and test it at home….yourself…..it very easy…. or go to the Dr. or drug store…. please do have it tested…. everyone needs to know what there numbers are…. please don’t put it off…. high blood pressure is the number one killer in our country….

  3. My face turns red, and I get a headache, Then I remember to take the Diovan for high B/p, and it goes away

  4. This question typifies a general misunderstanding of Hypertension; that is, it would give you an early enough warning sign so that you can then know to look for help. That perception is dangerously false, as the first indication of damage to your health from hypertension is usually something that is already considered to be too late, like a stroke or heart attack.

Even if you’re one of those that begin to show signs of the effects of high blood pressure (like injury to your retina, kidneys, or heart), you’re ignoring the fact that parts of your body have already sustained damaged, sometimes irreparably. But if you’re real unlucky, then your first inking of the effects of high blood pressure is perhaps to permanently lose the function of one side of your body or to have your family watch someone pumping on your chest in a desperate bid to save your life.

The ONLY insurance against hypertension is to see your health care provider regularly, and to follow their instructions in monitoring or medication maintenance. And just because you’re on medication already doesn’t mean that your hypertension cannot worsen or change over time. Your dosages may need to be adjusted or your medication may even need to be changed or augmented.

So, in answer to your question of:

"Are there any symptoms or signs that would tell a person that their blood pressure is high without going to a doctor or drug store and have it tested?"

The only answer I can state with certainty is, NO, there is not. You NEED to see your doctor. Good health, and good luck.

  5. I’m sure everyone has different signs/symptoms when their blood pressure is high. For me, I find that I get very weak and out of breath quickly. I also get short of patience with everyone for little things. I strongly recommend buying a b/p monitor so you can check it at home if you don’t want to go see a doctor or the pharmacy to get it checked.

I had an episode of severely high blood pressure 3 months after one of my children was born. I would have episodes over the course of a few days where I thought I was having svt’s (heart beating too quickly) and my hearing was all messed up. When I would say a word with an "s" sound I could only hear a "th" sound. It wasn’t good. Went to the hospital to find I was at 245/145. I had a 2 day/night stay in the hospital and it’s been good since then. They attributed it to pre-eclampsia as I had that through the pregnancy. The doctor told me it was very rare but it can still affect you up till 3 months after delivery. I was at the 3 month point exactly when that happened.
