How are blood pressure and swelling of ankles related?

Sister is 47, has been on low dose of medication for high blood pressure for two years, the blood pressure is under control. Over the past week her ankles have been swollen. Is this something we should be concerned about? What could it possibly be, heat??? Something serious??

  1. She needs to see a doctor, she might be retaining water, if so then her medication isnt working and may need more. She should atleast call her doctors office and tell them.

  2. Consult with her primary care giver – call the doctor

  3. caused by lack of blood to the feet can be from a blood clot in the leg or poor circulaion ck with the doc

  4. She is probably using a beta blocker for the high blood pressure. This retains water and has to be offset by taking a diuretic that gets rid of that water.
I have found that I was able to cut down on the quantity (instead of 10mg Norvasc every day, am taking 5mg every second day with 25mg of HCTZ (the diuretic)) which not only works fine for me but has rid me of migraines I had for over 50 years.
Of course that’s ME. Different people react differently to the same meds.
I am more in touch with my body than most, and have no problem adjusting meds (always down) from recommended doses without losing the desired effects.
My philosophy is, the least amount for the desired effect is the most beneficial.

  5. This could be dependent edema or something more serious. She should consult her doctor. In the meantime she should elevate her legs when sitting. When we get older the valves in our veins don’t work so well, causing a back flow of blood that is supposed to go upward to the heart. The result is edema. That is an over simplified explanation of what MIGHT be happening.
