I do no agree at all. The muscles are connected to the skeleton. The skeleton is the structure of the body. Nearly always the problem lies in the unbalance of the structure which causes the muscle tension. Working only the muscles is working the problem from the wrong end. You need to get the structure in balance first. When the structure is unbalanced, the muscles have to pull harder on 1 side to keep the body upright.

The QL does NOT raise the leg.
July 13th, 2008 - 19:25
you’re right…the QLs dont raise leg… never heard such rubbish… to have a healthy and strong spine, you need to have a ratio of 2:1 trunk extensor to flexor muscles….so if you do abdominals to strengthen the low back, then you shift that ratio to more 1:1 which makes it unstable… further, why do you think muscles tighten in first place?? its because you have pelvic and mechanical changes, increase stresses and hence the muscle act as protective mechanism… look for cause, not symptom!

If you have low back pain, mid-back pain, or whatever it may be, there is a really great read called “Healing Back Pain” by Dr. John Sarno. It conveys, without a doubt, the most Responsible Content on the matter that I have ever come across and is NOT “about” anatomy in general. You can google his name – don’t have to buy the book. I tried chiropracty, massage, cortizone, exercise, etc. P.S. I’ve had 2 discectomies in the past – didn’t know better, and….yeah, it’s a really worthwhile read.

does this mean my lower back hurts because my certain abs arent strong enough?
November 20th, 2009 - 09:20
it’s the kidneys that swell up against your lower spinal area……try DOANS back pills will reduce kidney swelling……. and ice on for 20min’s ONLY ……and yes to strengthen the abs for full balance……

Just some constructive criticism to help. You are confusing the psoas muscle with the iliacus. The psoas muscle attaches on the lateral surface of T12-L5 and the lower trochanter. The iliacus attaches to the iliac fossa and the lower trochanter. Together they are called the iliopsoas. They, along with the hip rotators, quadratus lumborum, glutes, quads, hamstrings, dehydration, bad posture, bad shoes (high heels or flat soles), and a plethora of other possibilities contribute to lower back pain.
