fix overprocessed hair?
i'm a black male and i have been growing my hair out for the past 6 years. i recently decided to get a perm and after about 5 months my hair started getting damaged and its been that way since then. i can still cornrow it and put it in a ponytail perfectly fine, its just that its kinda short in some places. it really aint a big deal considering my hair is still really long, i just want to fix it without going to professionals. its regular black hair, thick, kinda brown due to perm, and down to my shoulders. i just don't want it to get any worse. i've discounted my perm about may and been just washing it with regular dry and damaged hair shampoo. everyone else in my house are girls and always use up all of the conditioner so i rarely use that. i do use my sister oil treatment you have to heat up and leave in your hair for a couple of minutes. i'm thinking about buying hair vitamins and i think i'm gonna buy my own shampoo and conditioner to go with it. what is the best things to buy?

When I had overprocessed hair years ago I had to get my hair cut. Afterwards, I got microbraids to help grow out my natural hair and get rid of all the chemically treated hair. After that, I received another haircut that basically cut off all the chemically processed hair and left nothing but natural hair. I had to stop getting perms because they would seriously damage my hair and burn my scalp.
If you want to just continue to grow it out without getting a drastic haircut I would suggest using Optimum Oil Therapy Recovery Shampoo and Conditioner. It works great with my hair and I can use it without worrying about it causing a greasy buildup or anything like that. I also use Optimum Oil Therapy Shine Booster which is basically oil in a bottle. All you need is a little drop of it (dime size) and it should do the trick. Like I said before, it doesn’t make your hair feel greasy or anything. Optimum Oil Therapy has great products that are good for all types of hair, especially black hair. You can find it at Wal-Mart, Target or beauty salon stores. You should try the other products available in this brand… They are in a yellow bottle so it’s not hard to miss when you are searching for it. Here’s their website with all the products available: http://www.softsheen-carson.com/_us/_en/products/haircare/optimumoiltherapy.aspx
I hope this helps a little, good luck!

Really, the only way to fix it is to cut it off and let new hair grow. But without that, definitely look into a good conditioner. That will help put moisture back in your hair.

The vitamins are probably a good idea and certainly can’t hurt. You might want to think of eating more lean protein foods since protein is essential to any body repair.
The main thing with overprocessed hair is to resist further trips to the hairstylist, leave the hair alone, and let it recover and grow out. I think the cornrows are a good idea; no one will know it’s overprocessed and in recovery.

Relaxers and ponytails don’t mix. When you relax your hair, you weaken it, then the rubberbands or whatever you’re using to pull it back is stretching it past it’s breaking point, causing split ends and breakage. The key is to strengthen your hair and stop the damage – so if you must wear a ponytail, use the bands that don’t break the hair. Also, don’t pull it in a tight ponytail. Maybe you can just wear the cornrows, but they pull the hair alot too. So maybe you can just let your hair air dry and wear it out or in a very loose ponytail. Sorry your sisters are using all the conditioner, but you’re going to need to get your own if you want your hair healthy (Infusium or Aphogee). Hair vitamins will help, and MSM powder will too — not necessary if you eat healthily, but most people don’t.
