Does taking a blood pressure medicine lower the risk of heart attacks?

Just wondering if a person takes medicine to lower his/her blood pressure, does it lower the risk of a heart attack? Thanks

  1. Key drugs for high blood pressure:-
    * Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Lower blood pressure by blocking formation of a key hormone. angiotensin II, which both narrows arteries and causes release of another blood pressure raising hormone.
    * Angiotensin II receptor blockers: Lower blood pressure by preventing angiotensin II from attaching to a site.
    * Beta blockers: Lower blood pressure by decreasing the amount of blood pumped by the heart and by lowering the heart rate.
    * Calcium channel blockers: Lower blood pressure by preventing calcium from entering cells, thus increasing the size of the arteries.
    * Diuretics: Lower blood pressure by causing salt loss in the urine with accompanying body water, thereby reducing blood volume and pressure.
Blood pressure medications lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and acute kidney failure. This done by dilating and thus lowering the peripheral resistance of the arteries and controlling heart palpitations.

  2. usually— see fosinapril

  3. Shhhhh…..don’t tell anyone……but most people only take these pills because they taste just like Flintstones!

  4. There are many types of BP medication. The idea is to lower the work load on the heart and to decrease the risk of stroke. Heart attacks occur when the heart can’t get enough oxygen to support it’s workload, so lowering the workload should lower the risk. In addition to high BP, rhythm problems such as tachycardia (very rapid heart rate) can increase the workload.

  5. Yes.

But relying on a chemical to regulate the blood pressure is like playing with a loaded gun. The dosage has to be carefully monitored and adjusted – a perpetual cost to either you or your health care provider.

High blood pressure is caused by unintentional dehydration and can be avoided by maintaining the proper water and salt levels in the body. The medical profession doesn’t agree with this because there is no profit in prescribing water. They refuse to recognize dehydration at the level where health problems originate – while symptoms are minor and can be treated with water.

Instead, they wait until the body’s needs for water has created more serious issues that justify higher fees, invasive surgery and prescription medications.

Drinking water and leaving the soft drinks alone will correct high blood pressure.

  6. Actually 100s thousands people treated with high blood pressure meds every year. Why? Because most of them have borderline high blood pressure and did not need to take any meds. Most of them end up with a heart failure. I use to take 5meds and still had elevated hbp. I started a raw vegan diet about 5 years ago and was able to remove all of my meds. It is not about salt/ sugar , it is about putting superior healthy food in your system. If your BP is high over 160/90 take your pill BUT change your diet, monitor your BP and as your BP drops because of your diet reduce your meds then get rid of it when your bp readings come back normal. Again the key is diet: raw vegan diet.

  7. yes along with a low fat diet.
