Okay, since you are African American I’d like to speak to you about length retention. It’s a problem most black women have. Our hair grows just as fast as white people’s! It’s just that *we* cause our hair to break with relaxers, dye, straightening, combing too hard, not properly moisturizing, and other forms of harsh treatment. It’s important to keep our hair moisturized at all times. You can use a leave-in conditioner to do this. It’s also important to deep condition our hair at least once a month. Our hair is very fragile as well so it’s best to keep heat usage to a minimum. I personally do not allow myself to use heat more than once a month.
To answer your questions
1) yes, biotin works. I don’t know about the side-effects of prenatals so I wouldn’t recommend that to someone our age.
2) You can find it at Walmart, GNC, Walgreens, Right Aid, anywhere that sells supplements
3) It’s a tiny white pill. The pill bottle will say Biotin on it so you will know it’s right. I take personally 3,600mcgs a day. You should choose a good dosage that you think is best for you.
4) You just take it as a daily supplement with food. Instructions are on the bottle
5) Yes. Our hair is made up of the same thing as white people hair is. The only difference is the way we treat it once it emerges from the scalp. Not as many white people relax their hair and flat iron it into submission the second it comes out.
6) At most 3 inches. At least 1.5 inch (the normal growth rate is 1/2 inch a month. If your growth rate is slower than this is may be less)
But, you should check out the sites below. Our problem is hair health not growing. Our hair does grow. It just usually breaks off at the same speed because of the way we handle it.

No.
Biotin alone is not going to do that for your hair, that’s like have a car and not use gas. You need all the healthy foods from Mother Nature, not just biotin. Do you know what’s in the biotin?
Biotin – cauliflower, liver, salmon, carrots, bananas, cereals, yeast, and soy flour. Keep in mind that biotin content is reduced when food is cooked or preserved.
Prenatal vitamins don’t make your hair grow. Pregnant women have to start taking care of their bodies when they’re pregnant, meaning stop smoking, drinking, dyeing or perming their hair SO OF COURSE their hair start growing again. But it has nothing to do with their hair, it has something to do to help the development of their unborn child.
Shampoos are meant for cleaning hair, eating is for growing and you can’t speed up time, nor can you speed ‘perfection.’ "If you have no patience, you have no right growing long hair." ~ Hair expert of the 80′s.
Save your money instead of buying hair growth products or supplements. Vogue Dec. 2010, Vogue Feb. 2011 issue has a section on biotin, supplements, fish oil, etc. . Fish oil for example: Read the labels if they state that it contains: "one or more of the following: Cod, English Whiting, Shark."
The FDA don’t even approve of them. Because of inadequate quality control and inspection, supplements contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, or prescription drugs have been sold to unsuspecting consumers. And FDA rules covering manufacturing quality don’t apply to the companies that supply herbs, vitamins, and other raw ingredients.
Beginning in February 2008, they experienced one symptom after another: diarrhea, joint pain, hair loss, lung problems, and fingernails and toenails that fell off. FDA has received numerous reports of harm associated with the use of these products, including stroke, liver injury, kidney failure, heart palpitations, and death. 3-15-11
Google: MSN "Vitamins Can Do More Harm Than Good."
According Dr. Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic. Americans spent an estimated $176 million on hair loss products last year, and chances are some of that money was not well spent. Don’t let charming salon owners, seductive ads or fancy gimmicks convince you otherwise.
CNN, Slate, Consumer Reports, MSN, YAHOO have posted them online for years how people spend $20 billion per year on vitamins and supplements. According to Everyday Health, here’s an article that will tell you why . . . those PRODUCTS by any other name do NOT WORK. It is false advertisements. Google: Are Supplements Good For You? Best advice from Hollywood’s well known hairstylist in the 80′s once said: "Keep foods in your mouth and hair products on your hair."
If you’ve straightened your hair in the past, it may grow slowly or none at all.
Google: "Foods for Healthy Hair" – the website had moved, type it in.
Your hair may be the fastest-growing tissue in the body but, unlike the skin, it cannot repair itself. That is why getting the right balance of vitamins and proteins is imperative. Don’t expect to look like you’ve stepped out of a hair commercial the day after you’ve changed your diet. It is likely to take at least three months before you actually see tangible results.
Growing healthy hair doesn’t come from a bottle or pills and hair products do not speed hair growth. Any hair oil, is another form to keep hair moisturized, nothing more. If you’re in HS, your hair & nails should be growing normally, and as healthily as possible, since you’re eating healthy foods. But when hair isn’t growing as fast, it’s because they’ve been tempered with: chemicals, hair straightening, etc. . .
Cutting your split ends yourself, spend 5-10 mins. on a sunny day so you can easily spot them, using a 2" scissors, cut strand by strand, section by section, allowing new growth to take over. Then 2x a year, get a good hair cut. This won’t speed things up, but it will make the hair look healthier while it’s growing. Even healthy hair like mine get them, due to normal brushing & styling.

I know hair. I have over 4 decades of hair know-how. I have silky, shiny, soft, smooth very healthy hair down to my knees, started growing them in 2003. Previously damaged by perming & dyeing in the 80′s & 90′s. I’ve known people in their 30′s whose hair stopped growing from ironing their hair in the 70′s. When I was in HS, my hair grew from bob to waist length in 3 1/2 to 4 years, and cut 2x a year.
