Describe two ways that increase the water pressure in a hose that is analogous with increasing blood pressure in the veins

  1. 1. increase the water flow by opening the faucet/turning the handle to full "on"….the more volume of water, the more pressure………..the more volume in the veins, the higher the BP
    2. use a smaller diameter hose or only have the nozzle partially open or partially obstuct the end of the hose with your finger…same volume thru a smaller diameter will increase pressure…….vasoconstiction of the veins decreases their diameter, increasing BP
    3. stop the leak….escaping water from parts of the hose will decrease the available volume exiting the nozzle, decrease volume will decrease pressure…….hemorrhaging pts have less blood volume and thus less BP….although this is more an arterial issue
    4. gravity….having the nozzle lower than or at approx same level as the faucet as opposed to stretching the hose from the basement up to the roof…lowering the head of your pt to or below heart level and/or elevating their legs will increase venous return, thus increase blood pressure

  2. 1. If you increase volume being pumped, pressure increases. i.e. blood or fluid infusions into vascular system will increase liters/minute pumped and increase bp. 2. size of hose/arteries is also inversly proportionate to pressure. larger hoses or dilated arteries will mean lower pressure, smaller hoses or constricted arteries, higher pressure

  3. the more fluid in the hose the more pressure is exerted on the walls of the hose. same as the bp. the more blood or fluid in the arteries the more pressure.
the water flowing through the hose meets friction with the walls of the hose the more friction the higher the pressure. that is why they have drugs that keep the smoothe muscle in the blood vessels from contracting the drug kind of relaxes them allowing the artereries to dialate allowing more flow with less resistance. there are also drugs to lower blood volume the less volume in the hose the less pressure exerted. water pills is an example. the same flow of a liquid is going through 2 hoses, one hose is smaller in diameter and one is rather large. which one has the highest bp.

the smaller hose. hope this helps
