Could you survive with just water and vitamins?

I know water is essential to the body. But food is sort-of a cloudy situation because the reason we eat food is for the nutrients and such. Is it the fact that we just need some matter in our stomachs? Or is it the fact of no nutrition being digested that causes starvation? Would you be able to survive on a deserted island with Centrum® or Flintstones Vitamins® as long as you have water as well?

  1. We need carbohydrates for energy, so that our bodies can keep functioning. The carbs can be simple, like sugar, or complex, like starches. We need proteins, so that our bodies can maintain our muscles and other structures, because cells in these die off all the time. We need some fats, because there are areas and organ functions within our bodies that require them. So the answer is no, you couldn’t last indefinitely with just water and vitamin/mineral supplements.

  2. No. Vitamins and water are essential to your body, but not the only things you need to survive. You must have carbs, fat, and protein at the very least for your body to keep functioning. That is where your body gets energy from.

  3. Your body needs calories for energy and without them would go into starvation mode. Considering most vitamins have only a few calories and water has none, you would be getting absolutly no energy to use. Basically you would be starving yourself and would end up just like someone who is not eating anything( look at starving kids in third world countries).

  4. of course not…. Why do you think armies pack rations. You need calories, energy as well as other things.

  5. I suppose if you could find the right supplements you could do nothing but drink water and take pills, however starvation results from lacking vitamins, nutrients, and energy. You can find vitamins relatively easily in pill form but nutrients might be harder since they are usually proteins, fats, and carbohydrates from your favorite meats, dairy, and grain. Energy might be hard to find in pill form also, at least the good for you and not just caffeine and sugar types of energy.
