Can Vitamin B6 & Folic Acid make depression worse before getting better?
I've had a history with Anxiety & Depression, the anxiety looks like its behind me and the depression was stil there in certain ways (Fatigue, aching muscles) so I decided to try taking vitamin B12 which lifted me a bit more, but then I read about taking the combination of B12, B6 & Folic Acid.
So I got myself some Folic Acid & B6 and have been taking it for about a week and a half, suddenly i've started feeling very down and teary out of th blue which has really freaked me out. I was just wondering if those vitamins can cause things to get worse befoe they get better? I know that is the case with anti depressants which i took in the past but can that happen with vitamins?
Replies would be much appriciated :)
I've never been diagnosed as Bi-Polar but it feels like the depression is here for no reason now, years ago there were reasons benind it

it’s possible mate …… lots of things are possible …….. it would also depend on the quality of the supplement you purchased…… the thing with supplements is that regardless of the ingredients they put on the bottle you never will truly know just precisely what they’ve put in it….. there’s a 5% loophole in Australia that deems that if the final ingredient is less than 5% of the total end product that they don’t have to declare it at all ……. scary hey ……. i don’t know about other countries but anyhoo…. the best way for you to get your B vitamins is from the real fresh food source …….. far easier for your system to assimilate and much cheaper with no added fillers, preservatives or other nasty sludgechemicals either …….. eat more organic brown rice, wholegrain breads, lentils, chick peas, peas, beans, organic nuts and seeds like almonds and brazil nuts and sunflower seeds, fresh fish like salmon and sardines and tuna, leafy and green vegies ……. all rich in B complex vitamins ……. and if you absolutely must supplement with the b vitamins please do so with a whole complex as they work best as a group.
and try eliminating processed sugar from your diet in it’s entirety and see if that makes a difference to your mood.

Not AFAIK but you should be aware that depression isnt a constant low mood, but comes in waves of OK and low – so perhaps youre just having a low time. Also have you considered it could be SAD

While I can not say with the authority of someone trained in a medical profession, I would have to say no. I’ve been suffering from Major Depressive Disorder and Anxiety for many years. I take a B complex, C, D, and Folic Acid supplemant along with my one a day, and it hasn’t caused my depression to change for the better or worse. The only thing that affects my depression is my prescribed anti-depressant/anxiety medication.

I doubt it is the B vitamins or Folic. They are good for depression. Make sure the dosage is correct. Try this: write down everything you eat and drink during the day for about 2 weeks. At the same time write down the moods you feel during those days. See if there are any corresponding mood swings relating to the foods you eat. Cut soda drinks out of your diet. Don’t eat processed or fast food. St John’s wort works great for me (do not use it if taking anti-depressants). Good resource for health and well being: http://www.drweil.com/
