Black women with perms/relaxers and thick hair that is healthy!?

Okay. If you are not black, or have never dealt with black NAPPY and THICK hair you have no business answering this question

First of all I would like to know how often you relax your hair. Also, how often you trim your hair? How do you keep your hair straight after you straighten it?

Over the years I have found what works best for me. I know that micro/box braids worsen my split ends. And weaves are good for my hair texture because I am not touching my hair.

My hair is very thick.I have about an inch of dead ends left from the bleached hair i used to have 2 years ago (so i guess it took me 2 years to grow the hair I have on my head).

I have not trimmed my hair in 1 year, but plan on trimming an inch off as soon as I take my weave out.

Can I have some hair cair tips. Also, what relaxer do you recommend or does your Beautician use. And is it lye or no lye. Which is better? Have you heard of Dudley perm? What shampoo, moisturizers, pomades, do you use? What about straightener or blow dryer?

I have very thick hair so any smoothing and thinning products I would like.
i want silky straight hair. How often do you wash and flat iron? I want my hair to be very straight. Is it best to get hair done at a salon? I don't have the money for it and I fear my hair will fall out. I use at home relaxers, because my hair is so thick. and of course since I'm not a professional it is bound to have some underprocessed parts. My hair is strong, so it can take it, but what is better, professional?

This picture is from End of November. I got a weave in in January so I'm not sure how long my hair has gotten.

As you can see, my middle broke off because over the summer I let some knots sit in hair that hadn't been permed in a while. Don't worry, I'll never do that again. Also, my hair has been dyed last April, but don't worry I didnt use bleach. Last time I wanted a BRIGHT red like an apple, so i bleached and my hair started cracking off. this dark red/brown didn't do anythign wrong to my hair. I only plan on using permanent color every year or two, and often I use rinse out dye in between. I take vitamins which I think help, and try to drink a lot of water.

HELP ME

St pattys girl. How often should i be getting a relaxer? Or trimming. I already wash my hair once every two weeks usually. How often should I straighten. Someone told me I should not straighten hair unless it is just recently washed that day, because otherwise it is dirty. ALSO what conditioner would you recommend? Also, I always thought it was best to use a lower setting and go over the hair a few times instead of a hot setting once

  1. I am not African-American, but I own a predominantly African-American hair salon and have been working with African-American hair since I was sixteen-years-old. My foster parents were African-American, and my two daughters are half African-American. So I feel experienced enough to help with your situation.

Apply a relaxer about every four to six weeks when your natural ends start to appear. I love the Softsheen Carson hair products. I also like the Pantene Relaxed & Natural collection. I use those products in my salon. I recommend not to use products with no-lye because it dries and makes your hair brittle. If you cannot afford monthly trips to the hair salon, I recommend Pantene Relaxed & Natural shampoos and conditions, which are five dollars each at your local drugstore. Use a hair mask whenever you wash your hair for any desired amount of time. It restores your to health, gives it natural shine, and is like a spa treatment for your hair follicles.

When purchasing a blow dryer, make sure it has a cool setting which helps give your hair shine. Make sure your flat iron reaches at least 350 degrees to straighten your hair, or else it’s a waist of time and money. It may be expensive, but it’s worth the splurge.

Don’t wash your hair often because that dries it out. I recommend you wash your hair either once a week or every other week. ALWAYS use a hair conditioner after shampooing. The purpose of conditioner is to soften hair and make it more managable. Also try using a super relaxer if you’re not obtaining the results you desire with a regular relaxer. Thick hair, by the way, is indeed a good thing and a sure sign of STRONG and healthy hair.

Never bleach your hair when you have a relaxer because it can do permanent damage to the structure of your hair, and, as you’ve experienced, it breaks off your hair. I don’t suggest you dye your hair often either, but if you do make sure you wait at least three months after your most recent relaxer. Rinses are very good alternatives to permanent hair dyes and bleaches. The health of your hair is more important than the color.

Make sure you wrap your hair each night. Use a satin scarf and sleep on a satin pillow if you can. Also use a bit of hair oil every couple days to prevent your hair from drying. Oil sheen is good, too.

Here’s a hair tip for you: Want the ultimate hair shine? Rinse your hair with cold water after your final rinse when washing your hair.

  2. you probably dont care about my answer, but after having my hair relaxed for 11 years, i recommend not getting them at all. my hair is healthier and thicker natural, and not having to depend on a relaxer for these last couple of years has opened my mind to wanting to express what i was born with.

  3. 1. i relax my hair every 4 months i trim it when i get a perm. usually very little.
    2. i try to straighten my hair once or twice a week, i dry wrap it before i go to sleep.
    3. when i go to my beautician she uses an affirm perm, which keeps my hair still thick. when i don’t go to her, i use the little girl perm, the tcb, they work very good for my type of hair, and they don’t have lye.
    4. i have never heard of a dudley perm, and i use doo gro shampoos. right now im using a grease called hair food by blue magic, it doesn’t keep it the nasty greasy way, but just right, and when you do grease, MAKE SURE YOU DO MASSAGE it in,
    5. when i use straightener, i put the heat on 3-5 only because my hair thinned out from using them.
6.i wash my hair every 2 week, cause i have a lot of growing dandruff.
    7. you can have very straight hair, and you can do it your self because they use the same thing, but cut the heat up to 13 on your straighteners because you do have very thick hair.

    hope i helped God Bless!1

  4. My hair is natural and I honestly would never go back to wearing relaxers. My hair has never been more thick and healthy.
