Betty’s Healthy and Natural Granola Bars Recipe
In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make Healthy and Natural Granola Bars. These granola bars have oats, nuts, brown sugar, honey, melted butter, and a sprinkling of salt--all natural ingredients--no additives that you find in commercial cereal bars. Betty also gives her philosophy of eating healthy foods. Ingredients: 4 cups quick or old fashioned oats, uncooked 1 cup chopped nuts (I used 1/3 cup sliced almonds, 1/3 cup chopped pecans, and 1/3 cup English walnuts.) 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2/3 cup butter or margarine, melted 1/3 cup light corn syrup (You may use honey.) 1/2 teaspoon salt cooking oil spray Combine all ingredients in a large bowl, and mix well. Press into a 15 1/4-inch by 10 1/2-inch jelly roll pan that has been sprayed with cooking oil. Bake at 450 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. (Mixture will be brown and bubbly. I cooked my granola bars 10 minutes in this demonstration, but they were a little over-brown; 8 minutes would have been better.) Cool. Cut into bars and serve on a serving plate or store in a sealed container for up to 2 weeks. They stay fresh for a very long time! These granola bars contain *only* healthy ingredients and are a great choice over a candy bar, which generally has no nutritional value! They taste great, also! I hope you get a chance to try them!!! --Betty :)

Since you like the healthier substitutions, keep your eye out for the new Extra Virgin Olive Oil margarine, that is starting to pop up in stores with bigger Organic sections, or in health food stores. It is pricey of course, everything new and good is, but it adds alot of richness to baking recipes, with less bad fat, and more good fats. I have bought a couple of pounds of it so far, and both my husband and I enjoy it. I don’t have any at the momment, or I would tell you the brand name on it.

I tried the recipe but with honey instead of corn syrup and mine did not turn out right. They were crumbly and did not stick very well. Any tips?
August 24th, 2010 - 10:58
@TashaNicole1989 I like the healthier approach with honey, but this recipe may need corn syrup to stick together. I’ve never had a problem with them, except they are easy to overcook–but they still stick together.

Betty – what if I just want to make loose granola to sprinkle in yogurt or have as a cereal? Would it be ok to use less ‘sticky’ stuff and not pack it down on the sheet? Thanks a bunch!

@MsCybervamp Yes–I think that is a great idea!

how many calories ???
September 11th, 2010 - 23:07
@jzlACoSTE I don’t know the calorie count. These are not low in calories; however, the calories are not “empty” calories, like candy–you get oatmeal, nuts, etc.

Heyy Betty =] Can I use almond butter instead of chopped nuts? Will it be the same?
September 19th, 2010 - 17:50
@gymnasticslover96 It won’t be quite the same, but I think you can make that substitution work very well.
