26 year old female with drastically thinning hair?

Over the last year, my fine hair has gotten drastically thin. I can't wear it down anymore because you can see through to the scalp in different places.

1.) The women in my family have thin hair, but not like this. Mine is much thinner and you don't see their scalp.

2.) Yes, I have had a lot of stress in the last 2 months, but before that it was nothing out of the ordinary. My hair does seem to have thinned out alot more in the last 4 months or so.

3.) No, I have not been to a doctor. I do not have health insurance. I started taking a multi-vitamin and hair supplements (which is pretty much a B complex vitamin) about two weeks ago.

4.) I have not color treated my hair or done anything else with chemicals to it in over 2 years.

5.) I just recently quit smoking cigarettes.

6.) I tried getting my hair cut to above my shoulders, and it doesn't seem to have really helped much. It makes the bottom half look nice and full, but it's the top part that I'm having the problems with.

7.) I know that wearing it back tightly can cause damage- but I can't wear it down because you can see scalp patches. Wearing it in a ponytail is the only option right now.

8.) It is not breakage- on the pieces that come out, the white bulb is on the end.

I just don't know what to do. I don't want to use Minoxidil because (1) the side effects aren't the best and (2) it's a lifetime committment and (3) it's very inconvenient for women to use.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I feel like I'm pretty young for this to be happening and am honestly starting to get depressed and feel hopeless. I'm also not thin enough to shave it all off (nor confident enough).

  1. And the reasons are . . . . .

    1. I have had a lot of stress in the last 2 months

    2. I started taking a multi-vitamin and hair supplements (which is pretty much a B complex vitamin) about two weeks ago. People spend $20 billion per year on vitamins and supplements.  According to Everyday Health, here’s an article that will tell you why . . . those PRODUCTS by any other name do NOT WORK.  It is false advertisements. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t have to approve supplements — no agency in the United States does.

    3. wearing it back tightly can cause damage.

Supplements, steroids, hereditary, hair dyes perming, straightening, diet, having babies (yes I read once it happened to her), stress, medications with testosterone, certain antidepressants, menopause, anti-acne, and too much of everything. Add to that the 7,000 + toxic found in your home, plus pollution found outdoors. Your hair is crying for help!

It took years to get whatever in your system, it will take years to get them out of your system. Eliminate the ’causes’ and your hair will improve.

"Wearing it in a ponytail is the only option right now." Wrong, put your hair up using claw clips, example my profile. I never do pony on my hair. Create one of your own. I can do 7 diff. styles in a week, could take between 3-5 mins. a day. If I can do it, so can you!

  2. coconut oil, put it in and leave it in for about in hour and then take a shower. make sure the hair does not touch your face or else pores can get blocked causing pimples. make sure you get ALL of it out and that there are no residues

  3. Hi, I feel you. I had the same problem and now I have a full head of hair. My family also has sparse hair but mine was worse. Eventually I had to shave bald (this happened twice) after three years of stress. Following the second shaving in the third year, these are some of the things I did that led to my full head of hair (as thick as it was when I was a little girl!)

    a. started taking vitamin and mineral supplements specifically for hair
    b. actively sought to reduce stress through meditation, prayer and forgot about my hair problem … I was doing something about it the best I could do after trying for over three years
    c. Increased my fluid intake and eating healthy
    d. Stopped washing may hair too frequently and settled on once a week if very dirty but on average do once every 10 days. I discovered that by washing too frequently for my hair the scalp was dry leading to hair falling
    e. Still use treatment and conditioners as necessary
    f. gentle scalp massages when applying moisturizers and washing
    g. avoiding the use of any chemicals as much as possible including dyes, henna and heat treatment
    h. stopped touching my hair all the time. Since I was worried about my hair I spent most of my day with my hands some where near my head; a lot of time touching, combing and thinking about it.

I can’t tell you the one thing that really led to my hair growing but after 5 years of struggling with bald patches and total baldness I know this cocktail of things made a difference and I intend to continue for a long time. I also feel much healthier than I ever did.
